Bikram Yoga..Hot Hot Hot Yoga

P1In this article we will be discussing my experience in Bikram yoga. This and coming month we shall be discussing about fitness, well being including yoga and meditation. To begin with Bikram yoga is performed in a hot room and is of 1.5 hrs which includes twenty-six patented yoga asanas. Bikram Yoga is very popular abroad especially in North America and Europe.

Bikram Yoga was founded by Bikram Choudhury when he visited United States during the 1970’s. The postures are based on the hatha yoga technique while  I remember watching a video of Bikram Choudhury where he discussed how it is easy to mold metal using heat. This analogy applies to your body and mind to make it more supple and flexible when you practice yoga asanas in a yoga studio which is heated to nearly 40-42 degrees with special heaters and humidifiers. The difference between Bikram Yoga and other yoga techniques is that due to the temperature it maybe helps to accelerate weight loss and flexibility.

26-postures-bigBikram Yoga begins with breathing exercise  a form of pranayama breathing exercise followed in all yoga schools in India. Bikram yoga follows 26 asanas in accelerated form with each asana repeated twice except one asana. The asanas include both which are performed while standing as well as lying down. I remember when I had first gone to do Bikram studio, I was sweating profusely after two asanas. My friend Dusty ( an instructor from United States) walked in Hey Nish turn more, trun more common you can do it..Yes I surely could do but my as* was already on fire..Just Kidding..I have greatly improved ever since I first walked into Bikram Yoga studio but lots need to be done. As usual it was a personal embarrassment (in terms of perfecting some asanas) but I had accepted the fact from my Sivananda experience and had come to Bikram Yoga to reinvent myself. However before I could innovate I became irregular..hehe..It’s ALRIGHT ALRIGHT ALRIGHT

Since I have been doing Bikram Yoga for 3-4 months although not on a regular basis, I would like to share some pointers which will help everyone to derive best results while practising Bikram Yoga. First, since Bikram Yoga is conducted at high temperaturesunnameds it could cause dehydration so it is always advisable to drink a lot of fluids at least 30 minutes before coming to the yoga studio.

Second very important not to eat anything spicy and oily food at least 2 hours before your training schedule. Please avoid non vegetarian food and eggs (I personally love eggs and not much into non vegetarian food). You can always eat fruits and salads so that you do not starve before coming to the yoga studio.

The most important would be to be regular in this form of yoga and at least attend four classes per week for optimum effect. Also I found it is best to attend the classes either early morning or in the evening from my personal experience.

Bikram Yoga is headed by Paloma ( left side pic) in India and employees instructors from around the world which helps to get a better perspective of yoga and its benefits. I have met instructors from United States, Britain and New Zealand apart from India in Bikram Yoga, who shared stories about how Bikram Yoga helped themunnamed (2) to live a more holistic life. This is really great since yoga helps in binding people from different culture, religion and countries in a non sectarian manner. (Refer to my previous article on Sivananda Yoga).

I have tried various types of yoga and like all yoga traditions, Bikram Yoga also helped me, although i need to be more regular. I would suggest everyone to make use of free trail which Bikram Yoga gives you to get a fair idea and its always good to try new techniques and see what suits the best.

One advice would be to breathe when you do asanas..be aware of yourself and to be mindful..Breathe..Breathe..Breathe..

In case you are not able to do some asanas..relax..its alright alright alright..otherwise you might get hurt..
