Economics & Investment Management: Interesting Perspective

Listing two great books in Economics and Finance

Globalization and Its Discontents is written by Nobel Laureate Joseph Stiglitz who was once the chief economist at World Bank. The book gives an interesting perspective about the policies followed by International financial institutions esp. IMF, its implications and covers financial crises during the 90s including the South East Asian Crises. The book gives a great perspective on macro economics and played an instrumental role in my pursuing a career in finance. Later ? became discontented with Finance and its discontents. Guess who’s ?

downloadWhen Genius Failed The Rise and Fall of Long-Term Capital Management by Roger Lowenstein is the book I have quoted in my report Curious Case of China Equity Markets. It is the story of collapse of one of the greatest hedge funds which included Nobel Laureates like  Robert Merton and Myron Scholes among others. Remember Black Scholes model for pricing options…well Scholes was one of them.  Roger wrote a very entertaining book including some very insightful anecdotes about the working of hedge fund industry. Interesting to note how the FED stepped in to save LTCM crises which otherwise would have precipitated into much bigger economic downturn. Very entertaining take on hedge fund industry and the prevailing uncertainty governing the financial markets…
