Tata Power, the Rockefeller Foundation-backed by an Indian government initiative to enable renewable and sustainability globally, got a hyper-drive boost through the Renewable Microgrid Electricity Initiative. The partnership called TP Renewable Microgrid Ltd. will become the world’s largest microgrid developer and operator, setting up 10,000 microgrids in India.
About 70% of the Indian population still lives in rural areas, predominantly at the bottom of the pyramid. The initiative plans to scale up microgrids providing nearly 5M rural households clean energy amounting to 25M families over a decade. The partnership between Tata Power and the Rockefeller foundation would lower electricity and carbon emission by 1M tons per year, leading to a reduction of diesel by 57M liters per year. The report doesn’t account for the social costs related to health. And the humanitarian costs immeasurable.
