United Kingdom has won the gold medal among advanced industrialized nations to flag a go-ahead for Pfizer/BioNtech COVID-19 vaccine. According to BBC, the UK will receive the first doses of vaccine for immunization in the world. The country has ordered 10 million vaccines for Christmas. UK government accepted Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency recommendation after extensive clinical trials. The agency is one of the foremost regulatory bodies globally involved in the clinical trials and analysis of the data of the vaccine.
Recently, Pfizer/BioNtech disclosed that their vaccine is 95 percent effective under specific conditions in combating novel coronavirus. UK is seventh globally with total COVID-19 cases amounting to ~1,643,086 and deaths just over 59,000. The news is a huge shot in the arm as Europe suffers a resurgence in COVID-19 cases. The decisive decision of the United Kingdom will go a long way in catalyzing faster approval rate of the vaccine given the rigorous methodology involved in approving the vaccine. However, it’s ironic that the frontrunner AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine was not the first vaccine to be approved in the UK as the government was counting on its efficacy to fight the virus. 2nd December will be enshrined in history books.
