Yesterday World Health Organization commemorated the 40th Anniversary of Smallpox Eradication yesterday. Smallpox is the first and the only disease which has been eradicated at a global level. The disease had been prevalent for more than 3000 years killing more than 300 million in 20th century alone. By 1960’s the disease was still endemic in Africa and Asia. In 1967, WHO launched the 10‐year Intensified Smallpox Eradication Programme to eradicate smallpox from the face of the earth. Eradication of smallpox, is one of the most significant victories in the era of humankind in the healthcare sector.
